Wildlife artist, born on 12 July 1876 Ramsgate, Kent, SE England, UK. Her middle names are
Marie Louise.She illustrated Patrick Chalmers' Birds Ashore and Aforeshore (1935), and painted
postcards under the signature "Spink'. Winifred Austen only daughter of Josiah Austin, a Cornish
naval surgeon, and his wife Fanny, née Mann. She amended the spelling of her surname from
Austin to Austen from the time that she began to exhibit. Austen lived on the coast in Suffolk
producing many prints which, while possessing great charm and delicacy, are also exceedingly
accurate. She is well exhibited including an incredible 45 pieces at the RA and an even more
astounding 72 at the RE and also exhibited at SWA in 1905 and ARE in 1907. She was taught art
privately and became a painter, etcher and drypoint engraver and book illustrator.
She spent her spare time illustrating inmates at the London Zoo. Austen died in 1964.
